"​Fantasy author Brian Jacques died this weekend of a heart attack at the age of 71. He's best known for his lengthy Redwall series, which had 21 books in it which have sold over 20 million copies world-wide. I never read them, but I know they're much loved, and Jacques will be intensely missed by his readers. BBC News says that Jacques was once caned in school after turning in a short fiction story because his teacher couldn't believe that a 10-year-old could write possibly write so well, and must somehow be cheating. "Gertrude Maxwell, the philanthropic founder of Save-A-Pet Inc., died on Tuesday night. She was 99.

Mrs. Maxwell passed away at Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach.

She began her crusade at the age of 61 after attending a Chicago-area Humane Society meeting where she was shocked to learn that an estimated 90,000 homeless pets were euthanized across the country every month.

Mrs. Maxwell helped launch one of the nation's first "no kill" shelters in Highland Park, Ill., on Aug. 28, 1972, according to the Save-A-Pet website. Save-A-Pet is credited with saving more than 7
