On Wilfred, FX's Elijah Wood comedy adapted from the Australian original, the titular character is a dog — to everyone except Ryan (Wood), the near-suicidal neighbor who agrees to dog-sit him. To Ryan, Wilfred appears as a walking, shit-talking, hung-over man in a rumpled dog suit. Wilfred exhibits both human and animal behaviors: He watches a Matt Damon movie, then indulges in the urge to dig holes and pee freely around the yard. He gives Ryan some legit life advice (between beers and bong hits), and he also humps stuffed animals. This all raises a number of questions, obviously: How crazy is Ryan? If Wilfred is a dog, who's smoking the other half of those joints? And if he isn't a dog, then is Wilfred a furry, a person who puts on a costume, attends conventions, and perhaps gets down in a fur suit? To investigate this last question, Vulture spoke with Kilcodo, a practicing furry — her avatar is a lemur — and a professional fur-suit-maker, about Wilfred, the aesthetics of the dog suit, and how it's Ryan who's really the furry.

More than a decade after the beloved PBS show “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” went off the air, the series is getting a sequel. Fred Rogers passed away in 2003, leaving behind a legacy of nearly 900 (!) TV show episodes spanning five decades. Despite his passing, The Fred Rogers Company has announced the creation of a “multi-platform animated series aimed at preschoolers.” The new show will be called “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” and will concentrate on the 4-year-old son of Daniel Striped Tiger, a resident puppet of Mister Rogers’ well-known Neighborhood of Make-Believe.

The new FX comedy Wilfred is equal parts crazy, hilarious, crude and brilliant. The half-hour, live-action series, adapted from the Australian series of the same name, follows Ryan (Elijah Wood), a young man struggling unsuccessfully to make his way in the world until he forms a unique friendship with Wilfred (Jason Gann), his neighbor’s canine pet. While everyone else, including his owner Jenna (Fiona Gubelmann), sees Wilfred as just a dog, Ryan sees a surly, yet irrepressibly brave and honest Australian bloke in a cheap dog suit. As Wilfred, the dog, shows Ryan, the man, how to overcome his fears and joyfully embrace the unpredictability and insanity of the world around him, the two develop an unlikely friendship that gives new meaning to “man’s best friend.”

"MTV’s TV series reboot of the classic ’80s comedy Teen Wolf, premiering on June 5 after the MTV Movie Awards, is set to be markedly different from the Michael J. Fox flick. For starters, there doesn’t seem to be a modern version of best pal and love interest, the awesomely named “Boof” (travesty!). Instead, the network is going for an edgier approach and hoping to attract the audience of two other supernatural classics. “When I first talked to MTV about it, I said what if we do it kind of like The Lost Boys with kind of the pace and fun of Buffy,” exec producer Jeff Davis (Criminal Minds) told EW in February. “We’ve had comparisons to Vampire Diaires. That’s a very brooding melodrama. This exists far closer to Buffy.”"

FX’s ‘Wilfred’: Elijah Wood Is Dog-Gone Crazy In New Trailer

FX’s latest original series is Wilfred, a half-hour comedy starring Elijah Wood as a suicidal manic-depressive and Jason Gann as a dog. This one’s going to be strange, folks.

Wilfred is yet another Americanized comedy adaptation, this time coming from the Australian show of the same name. The original was broadcast down under in 2007, with a second season airing just last year. Wilfred is based on a 2002 short film by comedy duo Adam Zwar and Jason Gann. Zwar has been replaced by Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the forthcoming prequel The Hobbit) for the American version, but Gann will reprise his role from the original series as Wilfred the pseudo-anthropomorphic dog.

The premise for Wilfred is without a doubt the weirdest to appear on TV in a long time. Ryan (Wood) is a neurotic, depressed man whose neighbor (Fiona Gublemann, Californication) asks him to watch her dog during the afternoons. The dog, at least from Ryan/the audience’s point of view, is a full-grown man in a bad costume. Ryan struggles to keep Wilfred under control as he begins to question his grip on reality.
The trailer shows off the quirky black humor that FX seems to be favoring with shows like It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia and Archer. Ryan’s suicidal depression is played for laughs and Wilfred’s doggy interactions with his owner are exceedingly uncomfortable, in a good way. The series might just work, if writers can keep up the self-aware dialogue and situations and stay away from the disturbing furry undertones.

It’s a good thing that FX is picking this one up, because not many other channels (even on cable) would touch something as off-the-beaten-path as Wilfred. The network is known for pushing boundaries further than others, which will let the show stay true to its foreign roots -- broadcast standards in Australia are more forgiving of coarse language and naughty behavior, the latter of which is on display in abundance in the first video.

[DeoVacuus]

Kiira, an amateur fursuit builder, was paid $1500 for her appearance.

Producers of the show have been looking for furs since mid-2010, and also sought to buy fursuit photography. Other announced episodes cover sleeping with a blow-drier, eating toilet paper and thumb-sucking, while past seasons featured eating chalk and extreme tanning.

Many furs fear a reprisal of The Tyra Banks Show, whose host presented furry as a sexual fetish.

My Strange Addiction claims to "[tell] the compelling stories of people who are battling obsessive behaviors on the verge of taking over their lives" and "[follow] addicts as they reveal their strange addictions and meet with psychological experts."

Kiira constructed fursuits for herself and her boyfriend for the show:

I said many times that it is just a hobby, not an addiction, but they said "Well take you anyways" So I had about a week to make two fursuits, and they just filmed me in various places and all. Even though my fursuits suck in the episode, I still got $1,500 and 15 minutes of fame, which is more than many can say.

The furry episode of My Strange Addiction is expected to air at 9PM EST/8PM CET. Two episodes may air back-to-back; it is unknown which is the furry one, but the schedule should soon be updated."

DANGER!

From: "Krissy Cox"
Date: June 9, 2010 2:13:22 PM CDT
To:
Subject: Television Casting

Hi,
I work with a documentary television production company that is currently producing a series for a major cable network that profiles people with exciting hobbies bordering on obsessions, or overlooked or uncommon addictions. It is called “My Strange Addiction,” and will air on TLC. The program tells the stories of individuals, exploring how the hobby/addiction is affecting his or her life and the lives of friends and loved ones. We are interested in reaching out into the furry community. We understand that this community tends to be wary of publicity or media, however we have no interest in exploitation. The intent of the show is to bring light to different activities that appear odd, or to provide insight into the troubles of those with uncommon addictions. If you or someone you know might be interested in being cast in this program, send an email tokcox@20west.tv or send your name, age, location, a current photo, and a brief description of your hobby/addiction to casting@20west.tv.

Thank you!
Krissy Cox
