Editor's note: Yes, this seems like a shameless ad. I think this is a clever way to share one's knowledge of animal care.

Thewebinarvet.com is a fairly new company set up by Anthony Chadwick to answer a need for good quality, easily accessible CPD for busy practising vets. Many vets finish at 7 pm and then rush out for an 8pm meeting 40 minutes away up the motorway.

In 2008, at a wildlife center in Brazil, a healthy and playful lion cub named Ariel was born. Nowadays, he spends his days in a house in Sao Paulo, unable to move limbs. Ariel suffers from a debilitating autoimmune disease that has rendered him quadriplegic, and requiring of round-the-clock care from his trainers. Although it might seem like a lonely, hopeless life for the paralyzed lion, his story has won the hearts of thousands -- and thanks to their outpouring of support, he's getting the care he needs.

Five years ago Don and Brenda Hoch took home a skunk after seeing it by chance in a pet store

The Hudson, Fla., couple found they had a way with the animals, and now the Hochs share their home with not one, but 15 skunks.
Their original pet skunk, Spike, shares his permanent home with fourteen others the couple are fostering for Florida Skunk Rescue. Eventually the skunks will move to permanent homes.
"A lot of our rescues are skunks that needed someone to work with them because they were neglected in the home they came from and consequently became biters," Brenda Hoch said. "We've worked with them and have gotten them to become friendly again."
Fortunately, the Hochs don't live with a constant fear of being sprayed. The skunks are de-scented at a young age, around two to three weeks old.

Piercing kittens to give them a “goth” appearance is cruel, a panel of Pennsylvania judges has ruled.

Three judges of the Superior Court of Pennsylvania on Monday affirmed a lower court conviction for animal cruelty of a dog groomer who had offered “gothic” kittens on eBay.

The groomer, Holly Crawford of Sweet Valley, Pa., offered the kittens for $100; Judge Kate Ford Elliott wrote in a 19-page opinion that “metal protruded from the kittens’ small bodies, pierced through their ears and necks, and at least one of these kittens also had an elastic band tied around its tail, an attempt at docking, which is a procedure to stem the blood flow so that the tail eventually falls off.”

An investigator for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals posed as a customer and met with Ms. Crawford in 2008 and reported her to the authorities. The kittens were seized, and a jury found Ms. Crawford guilty of animal cruelty; in April of last year she was sentenced to six months of home detention and electronic monitoring, followed by probation.

Ms. Crawford, who was described in the opinion as having “several facial piercings” and being “enthusiastic about piercing,” had admitted to piercing the kittens herself without anesthetic, though she did treat them with antiseptic after the procedure.

In her appeal, Ms. Crawford had argued that Pennsylvania’s cruelty statutes were too vague, and said many accepted veterinary procedures like declawing cats and cutting a dog’s vocal cords could fall under the same category of “acts that maim, mutilate, torture or disfigure the animal” that she had been convicted of.

Judge Elliott wrote, “Appellant’s claims center on her premise that a person of normal intelligence would not know whether piercing a kitten’s ears or banding its tail is maiming, mutilating, torturing or disfiguring an animal.”

The judge added, “We disagree.”

France was punished on Thursday for not taking proper care of its hamsters.

The Court of Justice in Luxembourg, the European Union’s highest court, ruled Thursday that France had failed to protect the Great Hamster of Alsace, sometimes known as the European hamster, the last wild hamster species in Western Europe. If France does not adjust its agricultural and urbanization policies sufficiently to protect it, the court said, the government will be subject to fines of as much as $24.6 million.

The Great Hamster, which can grow up to 10 inches long, has a brown-and-white face, white paws and a black belly. There are thought to be about 800 left in France, with burrows in Alsace along the Rhine. That is an improvement: the number had dropped to fewer than 200 four years ago, according to figures from the European Commission, which brought the lawsuit in 2009.

The shooting of more than 23,000 rabbits in New Zealand during a charity hunting event held over the Easter vacation weekend has drawn fire from animal welfare campaigners.

While organizers of the annual Great Easter Bunny Hunt, held across the southern region of New Zealand's South Island, argued the event was ridding farmland of an introduced, rampant pest species, welfare group Safe saw things differently, the Sunday Star-Times reported.

Safe director Hans Kriek said the event promoted the killing of animals in a "party atmosphere."

"It's seen as a party atmosphere, sending people out as inexperienced hunters blasting away at animals," he said. "The ones they kill are one thing, the ones they injure are another."

Hunt spokesman Dave Ramsay said the rabbit problem was at its worst in the region for 20 years, and the annual event raised thousands for local charities.

In total 47 teams -- with 12 shooters each -- from all over New Zealand took part, Ramsay told The Otago Daily Times.

Although the event only carries total prize money of NZ$3,500 (US$2,800), the most sought-after prize was the trophy for the team which shoots the greatest number of rabbits, he said.
