Furries are a greatly misunderstood subculture. To better help understand the "Furry Fandom" - the mindsets of the participants, and how we compare to and differ from other fandoms (i.e. sci-fi and fantasy based fandoms), the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada and Niagara County Community College in Sanborn, New York, are conducting an international online survey of the Furry Fandom.

An Australian furry convention called MiDFur has attracted a decent amount of news coverage at their recent event, including TV and radio appearances as well as a number of print and online articles, some of which featured their guest of honour, Stan Sakai.
Although there is no official count, there were several attendees who reported having found about furry and the convention via the above media coverage.
