What we need is better Public Relations. To take a page from another convention’s handbook (Dragon Con), Furry Conventions should consider doing a media tour a day or two before the start of a convention. The idea is simple. As a convention organizer, you send out a press release two to three weeks in advance, letting television stations, radio stations and news papers know you will be in town.

"With the economy being what it is... I've gotten the impression lately that people are taking a second look at expenses and questioning the cost of some things they previously took for granted. And in regards to the fur community, I'm speaking of conventions. Looking at FC, for example... Last year, they had 17.5% growth in attendance... Since 1999, they've averaged 15.5% growth... But yet this year? 6.8%.

A tubby, sheepish kid named JP -- who looked like he should have been cast in The Goonies -- explained that, to him, Anime is like drugs. “It’s an escape,” he says. “It’s the ultimate fantasy.” His buddy Matt, a tall, glow-in-the-dark-bracelet-touting 16-year-old broke it down this way: “I get panic attacks at school,” he says. “A panic attack is when you can’t breath and you think you might die.” But, among anime-lovers, he says, everybody else is so weird, he doesn’t feel like an outcast. (Nerd power!)

He pulled up his mask, and with a serious expression, offered us a word of warning.
